Nan & Grandad by sweeny

Currently unavailable for purchase

My maternal grandparents, both born in 1898.
Herbert Hamilton, my grandfather has always been a bit of a mystery in the family. All we know of him is that he was brought up in an orphanage for sailors children in either Manchester, or London.
He died in 1933 of pneumonia aged just 35. (no anti biotics then). This left my grandmother with 6 children to rear on her own, which must have been extremely hard in those days.
She had the unusual name of Hager, which I believe is a name from the bible.
She died in 1981, aged 83, leaving behind her all her children (except for her eldest son Ralph, killed serving with the British Army in Crete in 1941), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
This photograph was taken on their Wedding day 1n 1918.
