Maitland Gaol by Su Walker

The arch of justice, the wall of tears

Those whom have entered the steely gates
Coldly awaken each day to await their fates
Their muffled whispers portray their fear
Their soft footsteps trace paths of yesteryear
I hear their voice I sense their pain
They understand its here they will remain

Past, present, futures undetermined
Their thoughts, their feelings, aspirations burdened
Atmosphere so thick with despair
Nothing sacred, respected and by God -nothing fair
They shuffle down the corridors
They failed humanity they broke our laws

Eyes that follow from within vacant cells
Lifeless sight drawn upon a living hell
A portal glimpse of empty matter
Doors that close, voices that chatter
Cold air funnels the fallen leaves
Sensors alert – receive, deceive, believe…

Look down upon them but also care,
Recognise their never ending nightmare
those left alone here to moan and weep ,
are banished evermore from eternal sleep
Their punishment lingers on and on
Memories of freedom, their life gone, gone, gone…

A cold harsh past stretched forth to eternity
A forever future of endless uncertainty
The chains of doom rattle with age
Forgotten souls simmer in rage
Forgive them their trespasses or remember their treason
For they linger bound, sentenced, season after season.
