My Daughter, Myself

My Daughter, Myself

My daughter recently left on a trip I did not want her to take, but being 18 I could not stop her. Before she left we had bought a Norah Jones CD and on the back was a sort of dark moody portrait that my daughter loved and she asked me to work on one of her while she was gone. This really flattered me as she hates to have her picture taken and I really wanted to please her and give her something to hang on her dorm wall this Fall. As I was painting this in Photoshop I began to realize the face was as much my own as it was hers. I started thinking about what I was like at 18 and I had taken off to the outta Banks of NC and lived there a year , not knowing a soul there. I thought about how smart and capable my daughter is and as I painted I began to trust her more and worry less. I somehow just knew that she would be okay and would make it home without mishap.
When she came home tonight , the first thing she said was “God, I missed you so much, you don’t even know” and then she said “You know , we are so much alike you and I”..
and I felt she and I had both grown and …indeed became more of one another while accepting that she is very much her own person.
She loves the portrait! and I love that she loves it!
I am blessed..
(like most art and life, I am not sure I am finished with this)

Such a gorgeous image and your words enhance it greatly….......I understand completely, I still worry about my son at 23 and giving him the space for his own life was not easy at all a few years back, but when they turn and show you just how much they have grown under your loving guidance, makes it all worth while.

Looks like a Charles Blackman painting, beautifully composed Susi

Charles Blackman is a major figure in Australian art of the post-war years. His haunting and enchanting images of women and girls, absorbed in daydreams or games have an enduring appeal. Two significant themes in his work have been the Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland. Deep shadows and the accentuation of his figure’s eyes occur throughout Blackman’s works with a pervasive sense of melancholy.

    Cheers,
    Rock

Susi, I don’t know why I never saw this… maybe cause it’s so different from your cheery, brightly colored pieces I’ve adored in the past, I just passed over it. But I can go only so long without wondering what’s going down over on your planet, so decided to take a look… and I’m so glad I did.

As you described the evolution of the picture that tracked the evolution of your feelings towards your daughter’s coming of age, I felt tears coming on… not only cause I know what you’re going through from my own experiences with Melanie, but because your picture is so from your emotion relating to her new found freedom as well as from your heart. She appears apprehensive and even isolated from the cheeriness that surrounds you… yet it seems the things you have given her refuse to leave her in solitude, and that includes her likeness to you.
Maybe I’m off the mark with this, but I know you Susi, and I understand the love that went into this unusual and amazing portrait. And one thing I’m abasolutely sure of is that this will remain a treasured possession that will take on a new appreciation of what you have given her in every stage of her life.

This is Gorgeous. and it touches me deeply.
you have such amazing talent and capacity to give.
    xo

  • susi lawson replied

Aww Billy Bud! I love that you love this and I actually do feel that you know me and get me and you get the whole parent/child experience as you are a sensitive artistic soul !
I had this printed on canvas for her and she picked out a frame that matches perfect, sort of copper and tarnished bronze .. she decided not to hang it in the dorm, she said “It is just so personal and special mom” and that made the gift complete.

You write as well as you photograph and paint, which is saying a lot. This portrait of your daughter both strokes the heart and cuts deep. I’m using Lightroom and Photoshop and I own Corel Painter but haven’t gotten started on it yet. I should read your writing on that software before I do. Great work!
