A Contrast in Connections
I was shooting a basket ball game and noticed this cute couple in the bleachers, they were such a contrast to all the teens nearby who were all ‘connecting’ with their cell phones and ipods and looking so isolated from one another. Ironic how lonely we can be in this age of mass connectivity!
I painted this in Photoshop and spent 2 entire nights on it, as I had an idea in my head as to how i wanted it to turn out. I composited a few other ‘bodies’ from another shot and zoomed in and used airbrushes, smudging and some custom brushes.
Hope ya like it.

I love the random attention, here and there, but not connecting with the game or much of anything. It really strengthens the center of attention, the connectedness of the couple. Well done.

Thank you Dick!

Sensational work Susi, I absolutely love this. It almost has a Norman Rockwell look to it.
susi lawson replied
Thanks so much Simon, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear! :)

This is amazing, the image and the message. I have a teenaged son and it has been concerning me as of recent just how little he connects with people OTHER than with his cell phone – texting mind you – not talking. I have recently limited his use for this very reason so this image rings so true for me. I love it! When all we do is communicate with people through texting and emailing we loose that important emotion needed for true communication. Perfect! Straight to favorites.
susi lawson replied
Exactly what I was trying to convey! Thanks so much! I have rules for texting, not in restaurants, car trips etc as I was beginning to feel all alone with my daughter right beside me and just had to make some changes. They have grown up with it and it is sad that this is the new ‘normal’ in communication. Good for you for paying attention to the lack of attention!

Magic work, Susi, love the intense gaze of the lady bottom left, she adds some connectivity to the game, at least….the two in the centre are fabulous!
susi lawson replied
Thanks Mel, yes ,the girl with the gaze is the other girls cousin, and not sure she was approving.
Mel Brackstone
hehehe…..either that or she’s jealous :)

This is really a remarkable image…simply in the fact of the stark contrast between them and the others all around them….A real GEM of yours Susi…I love how you have grown professionally over the last 2 years…..Amazing transition from 2 years ago

Susi, this is brilliant. The saying “no man is an island” obviously has no bearing here, with the 2 central figures standing out like they have been transported there from somewhere else. It’s really astounding how you’ve captured the icons of modern times, the headphones, the cell phones and the disconnectedness of the people in the photo while displaying the ultimate connection as the focus. I just adore this photo and your work and your message.
susi lawson replied
Thank you so much! When I got home and loaded it on my computer I thought “This is pretty cool…what a great example of the times we live in and how it affects our youth” I didn’t know if anyone else would see the same thing or value the message it portrayed..so I am very glad to see that it comes across as I had hoped! Thanks so much!

Incredible photo-illustration Suz – were you using the Lucis plug-in to get the HDR type look?
I know that a lot of people try to get this effect (or guess how it’s done – so many photographers puzzle over Dave Hill’s techniques)with burning and dodging as well….
susi lawson replied
Hi Thomas! I actually used shadow/highlight (poor mans HDR :)a layer blend mode with color dodge before I painted to get the lighter look, and used high pass filter to define the edges and diligently painted every pixel using a stylus. Glad you like it!
