Rant for the day

I’m starting to like Marieke Hardy: http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/tv—radio/years-most-vile-show/2009/07/01/1246127569460.html

Although I have to say that it would have more credibility if this critique was written by a woman who was not young, attractive and who had not yet felt like she became increasingly invisible as she aged. I wholeheartedly agree with her sentiments, but I’m painfully aware (as evidenced by the comments on many of the photos here on RB) that most of the world still judges women by their external appearance (and yes I do understand the complex historical and biological reasons for this).

Just my rant for the day :)

Susan, my interest was piqued by your words, but when I cut and pasted the link it said ‘this page could not be found’. :-(

  • Susan Trigg replied

Hmm, not sure what went wrong… will repaste the link

If that still doesn’t work, you should be able to access it from the entertainment part of the Age website. Sorry bout that!

I do think the female form is beautiful but I agree that many photographers here get a little extreme and carried away with it. Come on if you are that good a photographer, you should be able to show the beauty in all forms, not just busty, slim, young and taught ones.

  • Susan Trigg replied

Like a portrait painter, the skill is in showing the beauty within, hey :)

I think it would be more accurate to say that many ( not all ) people judge other people by external appearance, it doesn’t just apply to women, we live in a very shallow world unfortunately. As for photographers here only showing young slim and busty, personally I photograph whoever comes my way, and haven’t refused to photograph anyone that hasn’t had unreal expectations. In fact I have tried to find women to model who don’t fit the YS&B mold without any success at all. So don’t necessarily shoot the photographer :)

  • Susan Trigg replied

Hi Larry – No violence to photographers intented here – I was actually referring to some of the comments about photos rather than the subjects photographers choose to photograph – we all admire beauty in whatever form we find it. And I take your point about people in general being judged on their appearance – only I assure you it is a far bigger problem for women – switch on the TV evening news, open a magazine and you can surely see this. My main beef was with Marieke’s naivety, coming from her privileged position in terms of youth, appearance and status in the media.

I completely understand your point Susan, hope you are well, I continue to watch your work with interest. Hope we run into each other again some day, cheers

I also read that article Susan. I agree with your sentiments totally.
It continues to amaze me what passes as ‘entertainment’ on TV and, even scarier, that there is an audience out there that actually watch this tripe. This example is yet another one where people put themselves up for humiliation and degradation for what gain – money? They don’t seen to mind the destruction of their dignity in the process.

    Have a look here,

You will be pleasantly reassured that all is not lost yet!!

  • Susan Trigg replied

Yes – it also bothers me that people become passive in the process (both the participants and the audience), rather than take responsibility for themselves. Thanks for the link about Mel – can’t you see the creative fire behind those eyes! That’s real beauty ;)
