Print of pastel painting
There was so many of these beautiful butterflies in my garden that I felt it was time to paint one. It was a circus doing so with me chasing them around in the garden to check that I was portraying these beauties correctly.
Gorgeous! The butterfly is painted so perfectly.
Thanks so much :D
This is beautiful Susan – I love pastels.
Thanks Helene. Pastels are my favourite medium to work with.
I didn’t know pastels could create such wonderful colours. Is there any margin for error with pastels? How do you get fine lines? To me, pastel is just a chunk of chalk and all I have managed so far is a smudgy line :) You are very clever.
Dave I do break my pastels to get a fine line plus over the years I have learnt to use the sticks like a brush so that the wide parts of the stick as well as the ends are being used as well. What happens I then end up with sharp parts on the pastel stick that I then use for the finer details. With practice you soon learn to place the stick on the paper to get the marks you want. At no point in my work does my hand rest on the paper, which eliminates smudges plus avoid blending as much as possible when you are pastelling so that you are left with a lovely texture to your work.
A bristle brush and a kneadable eraser is handy for removing mistakes. ;-)
