Every Fall and Winter it is normal duty to stay on the trails and be on the lookout for those stray calves, who get seperated from the mother’s on the trip down to lower pastures for winter.
A wrangler friend of my told me he can tell by the look on the mother cow’s face if she has lost her calf in the shuffle on long trek back to lower ground. It can take up to a month to round up strays and do a final head count before the deep snow flys.
