Artist's Description

2-19-2015…Just wanted to thank the Mystery Buyer today for their purchase of a greeting card of this work.
I haven’t been on Redbubble since our horrific house fire of 1-15-2015 where many of my original paintings and drawings were destroyed.
This work however did survive… and although over 60 original pieces of art work displayed here on Redbubble were declared a total loss, I will strive to restore many of them… out of the ashes as they say.
This work is dedicated to all of my students that use my work on Redbubble to help with their own journey in art.
Thanks again for viewing.

This is a Prismacolor Pencil, Pen and Ink and Pastel Pencil Drawing.
Drawn on card stock, acid free, smooth bonded, artist drawing paper.

Also shown are the steps I go through to achieve my drawings. This is for my art students that are using my RB site for study….and for all of you here at RB.

First: I draw a detailed graphite line drawing, I then go in and play in the shadows to ground the drawing. I tell my students to try and play in the shadows for as long a they can, grounding your drawing keeps everything in perspective.

Next: I head straight for the face…I feel if the face does not turn out…what is the point of doing the drawing.
I find many of my students will decide to go to other less demanding areas to start their portraits… then they suffer the anexity of composing the face and many times all of their hard work on the rest of their drawing is lost.

Start with the face and the rest is frosting!

*After I am satisfied with the face in its early blocking form… I now feel that I can start my way through the rest of the drawing. Going back into the shadows and grounding the rest of the portrait.
I continue on and tighten up the drawing and seal it… defining my colors, going in with the high-lights and lift..

Total drawing time for me with this piece was about 4 hours. Some drawings feel like they draw themselves, others can challenge everything I feel I know.
Josey was a joy to draw…

Thanks for viewing my art.
