At War No More

At War No More

I seem to go back to the Native American in my artwork…I have some kind of affinity through the memories of growing up just outside the Rosebud Reservation in Valentine, Nebraska.

My childhood visions are as strong today as they were when I would stand and witness the heart pounding, fast paced, emotional and colorful pow-wows.
The gathering of the tribes from the Nebraska/Dakota territory would come together…man, woman and child and a mystical energy would hold them for days …the energy had a far reaching effect…it touched a little girl standing on the outside watching, holding her Grandmother’s hand…. and it has lasted a life time.
This is an oil and acrylic painting, painted on gallery wrapped artist portrait canvas.

What a gorgeous image! Your mother must have been quite a woman to know how that little girl would be affected for her entire life by witnessing such an amazing ceremony. Your imae brings the dignity and beauty of the American Indian to us all. Well done!

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

Thanks Barb… it was my Grandmother who would take me out to the gatherings…she was just as enthralled as I was and we would stay for hours sitting on the hood of the car…as for my mother, she wouldn’t get caught dead on a reservation…LOL…!
    Thanks again!

beautiful painting…....wonderful tribut to Native Americans…...........

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

It is about the only tribute we can give them…The American Native is a sad,sad element of our country’s dark corners…sorry, just grew up around them and see the conditions here in the desert on their reservation…I’ll get off my soapbox now… LOL! ...oh and thanks for viewing and your comment KJ…

Instant Fave Susan:=} This is simply superb, the colours , the capture of emotion and personality, with definite meaning of an amazing people;=} I have read a tremendous amount about the Indians, since I have moved to America. All they wanted was their land and to be left in peace, sadly it was not going to be. The Trial of Tears touchs my heart.

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

As I said to someone else… the reservations leave much to be desired… unless they have a Casino connected to the property and then you do see that the reservation is kept up a bit better..the Moapa Tribe here has a most wretched reservation here in the desert…went out there once to see if I could get some good people/character shots and after about 20 minutes, I turned my car around and got the heck out of there…sad, sad, sad…
    Thanks Annmaree…

I often see the remains of Indian villages here. It is sad that they are gone and that they are living under such adverse conditions to this day. xo

wonderful painting Susan. very powerful touch. these day i found native american become very nice painting subject. why they are so attractive on canvas?

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

I know I am drawn to the native american …I think it is the look in their eyes and the weight of the ages they carry on their faces even if they are young…even the women have that look…anyway that is why I guess I always return to these faces…
