Victorian Mink

An original Pastel, Prismacolor Pencil, Pen and Ink drawing.

Drawn on card stock, bonded, acid free, low tooth artist drawing paper. I use a bonded paper with low or no tooth for the smooth blending abilities and so the pastels are not chewed up during the drawing process.

I love that your work always gives free reign to our imaginations, allows us each to see something unique, though our perceptions overlap, and our attentions focused on different dimensions of the emotion. Your photos are a story tellers dream, in that they so easily inspire our capacity to create a narrative around the image.

I see a pampered, upper class, twentyish young woman, whose never had to deal with life
s harsh realities. Blessed not only materially, but with physical beauty as well. In a sense, I see a young, female Gatsby-like character in the process of creation. The annoyance in her face might reflect something as trivial as being glanced at by staff, an impertinence, which she would scarcely regard as “trivial”, but rather an omen that civilization itself was falling apart, lol.

I see strength in her face, but strength overshadowed by an insouciance which will sow the seeds of a hubris yet to come.

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

Kevin, I am humbled that you would take the time to see and say so much about my simple little drawing…I would love to have you go through my collection some time and just find ones that move you to such observations! You nailed this one though…as this was a photograph of an aunt from back in the 30’s and a combination of a photograph of my grandmother…both women were rather austere and proper…”People are finished, porkchops are done” kind of women!!! LOL…and God forbid if you used the wrong fork at dinner which was promptly at 6 pm, and you came dressed…
Thanks for this…it was refreshing to hear a observation based on your visual field.

What a classy piece, I do get that Victorian feel. I do agree with JC, this is not the norm for you in way of the style, but I like it very much.

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

It was a quick study for my students and I needed to show how to lay on the work just incase there were those who wanted to get involved in backgrounds…backgrounds to me are not my fav…Thanks for the view!
