I love that the photo allows each of us to interact with it in a different way, to project, as it were, our own feelings into her. Last week I might have come away having shared despair. But today, I see a woman who has just put a book down and taken a moment to reflect upon something she’d read, or a memory triggered. I think there is a sadness here, though its depth and contours will be determined by the viewer. For me, her sadness is closer to a sweet melancholy, or perhaps nostalgia. A contemplative, gentle sorrow, rather than a profound unhappiness, or even despair.
Susan Bergstrom replied
My goodness..this is quite the compliment on my capture…thank you so much for seeing and feeling all that I intended and especially the part about letting the viewer decide the individual envolvement…

Such emotion captured. Sadness, worry and loss are what this says to me. She tried to read her book to get her mind off her concerns, but could not concentrate. Great Capture!
Susan Bergstrom replied
It was at the end of a very long day of shooting and she was just spent…really didn’t know that I had taken the picture until I had shown her…Thanks again…
