Spike Came To Visit!

Spike, the Desert Tortoise came to visit today after a 5 month absence…They go underground for months at a time usually resurfacing once or twice a summer for a refill on food and what ever else they like to do when they come out of their underground world.
But Spike (I named him that because he loves to eat the spiky cactus)..never showed all summer, the last time I saw him was the end of May.
Well he got the little dogs attention today…I heard barking and went out to see our old friend…he usually makes his way to his favorite cactus, but I stopped him for a photo shoot with some apple and leaf lettuce…after the spot light and the pictures, he made his way back to his favorite eating area and all was right in the Tortoise World.
I love it everytime he decides to come topside!

Ohhhhh, I love that picture! I used to have a “pet tortoise” – as much as you can have them as pets. Someone had abandoned it in the city of Munich (can you imagine? :( ...) we found it and took it with us countryside… She stayed with us for over 4 years until she went missing after we had workers in our yard who didn’t tell as that they tore out the tortoise fence :( ... I loved her and I miss her so much. They’re incredible fascinating creatures and gorgeous, too! And they do have character!
The angle you shot this is marvelous.

Oh I feel so bad, but maybe that is why he came around today cuz he knew someone needed to see some pictures of him…I know I just love to watch him…they are so facinating and primal…how they survive is beyond me and when I do see him/her??? I always give food and it is gobbled up but then it always straight to the spiky cactus!
Thanks for viewing, didn’t know if anyone would be interested in seeing him/her but it is a very big deal around here!

Oh this is great :), great detail !! and I like how well they blend in to the surrounding terrain and camoflauge themselves. He doesnt look to happy though lol

Ha…I think they only smile if Disney has something to do with it!!! But I could have sat there all day and took pictures of him/her?...I think him..any way it is always such a treat when he comes to the surface and pays a visit! Thanks!

Thanks Julia…it is always such a big deal when ever he comes around…they are actually endangered and we could have our acreage declared a haven, but then we couldn’t move so much as a rock…!!! No thanks…we will just keep our visitor to ourselves!!!

  • Susan Bergstrom replied

They are and very stoic…nothing is done in a hurry (really?) and he just closes up shop if he feels threatened…I love it when he come to see me! You have to do a Woe-Man out of him!!! The one where he has his mouth open grabbing the apple!!!! JUst kidding…
