Hell is other people's code

Buy this for that special computer programmer you know, and they’ll nod knowingly to themselves, then compliment you on your witty good nerd-sense. Because they can truly appreciate the living horror of classes over 5000 lines long and 10+ levels of nested conditionals… Sartre was right, and nothing manifests the creeping eldritch horror of the human condition more than legacy code.

    Oh yes, you are so right. I remember the time that Annemieke needed a hand with an illustrator file because it was behaving strangely, and taking ages to redisplay the page… turned out she didn’t realise that “Paste in Back” and “Paste in Front” actually pasted a copy of what was on the clipboard… there was about a 1000 copies of the artwork, all neatly stacked on top of each other, perfectly aligned. Yeesh. It’s homogeneously analogous to the “Hell is other people’s code” idea…

    Thanks! I’m currently living code legacy hell, so I was definitely the first person to order one of these! Honestly, there are some amazingly clueless people out there. Yesterday we saw something like this:
    String s = new String(“some string”);
    assert (s != null);
    if (s != null) { ...
    }
    Like, what the hell is that about? Don’t trust primitive object creation? Need to use a constructor for a constant string value? WTF?
