SeaHorses (Collaboration with Gene Praag)

Several months ago I was commissioned to do another cover for Conscious Living magazine here in Australia. The theme was to focus on “wild” and in particular….HORSES!
My first thoughts turned to a good friend and talented photographer here on Redbubble – Gene Praag who regularly captures amazing images of the wild horses in his home state of Utah.
And so I asked this fellow bubbler would he be able to help me with REAL wild horse images to work with, as opposed to me taking shots of local domestic horses and pretending they were “wild”.
From this collaboration I generated several pieces of art, and had loads of fun, and I have to say, both Gene and I were surprised at the magazine’s final choice of one of the less artistic images for their cover this issue…..

(and yes, before anyone comments, I reckon Equus is spelled differently…lol)

so I decided to share with you, one of the other images created from our joint efforts.

SO thank you most sincerely to Gene for his generosity and kindness and for being so helpful in this project…... if you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to check out his amazing portfolio of images featuring the wild horses of the USA captured in their natural habitat, and being …... wild and free….. along with many other beautiful landscapes and subjects…..

    Such a wild, beautiful image Wendy, I really love the transparent spirit-like horses in the background! I guess the magazine had to choose a simpler image for clarity and publishing purposes, but sooooooo cool they selected one of them! :-)

    Yes I thought the same, for obvious layout reasons….lets face it, it doesn’t have to be great art to carry all those headlines, just a good background that blends in with the theme.
    Still, it was a great exercise and another learning curve…...glad you liked this “oceanic” version…..it was my favourite of them all, but definitely way too busy for a magazine cover…..... :-))

    I love the art feel of this, but I also see how the magazine went a bit low key and chose the other image. I really think just being on the front cover that all the lovely “ghost” like horse images on this image would have been “lost in translation” so to speak. So be proud of both of these images. Definitely adding to my favorites!

    Yes, WOW – and what a wonderful collaboration. How incredibly creative of you to think to obtain images of the real thing, as opposed, as you say, to making the quick and easier choice of shooting domesticated ones. And congratulations on the success of the cover. So few of us can claim success professionally in the area of the arts – I certainly can’t, lol – so Kudos on every level Wendy :)

    I believe in using the most pure energy in the images I create….so if it is about someone or something, then I weave in images of that person or thing…... or symbols that are relevant, even if no one but I know about them ;-)) Just my own crazy way of seeing things I guess…... lol .... to me it puts meaning and “energy” into my art.
    Thank you for your kind words here….. I wonder if this is success or just a form of vanity…... as a struggling artist it is probably madness to give my time and work away for free, but somehow, it just feels good to do it and have some “exposure”...... (maybe you could say I am having fun, plus it gets me to meet people…)
    They have just called me to discuss a third magazine cover, so I guess that is a good thing!

    It’s not madness to give your time and work away for free. For me it exemplifies everything that is beautiful within a community of artists. Interesting parallel between what you said and the earliest days of computers. Gates had basically stolen the DOS code, and lured an unsuspecting IBM into a licensing arrangement with the ultimate result of his becoming the richest man in the world. At that exact same time, the two guys who created the first spreadsheet = later to evolve into Excel et al – made a decision to make it available to everyone for free. They never made a dime. Everyone knows Gates. Few remember those two fellows. But knowing of Gates and respecting him are entirely different.

    As to vanity, we are all vain. It’s pointless to deny this dimension in ourselves. The main thing is that we recognize it, seek to contain it, and not be usurped by it – the Diva Complex.
