The Line of Bast

The Line of Bast

I had the good fortune to visit the Cat-Toy cattery at Lake Clifton, WA and view some of the amazing Sphynx cats that live and are bred there, not to mention also totally adored by their owners Carol and Jim.
I was inspired to weave them into some Egytpian artwork to honour their heritage.

What amazing images. They are so superior aren’t they. I used to have a very jealous Siamese Cat. He was a fiend who didn’t like me talking to anyone but would leap on my shoulder and push his body in front of my face. He was a nightmare:-))

  • Wendy Slee replied

thank you so much Jenny…..I can imagine your cat…that particular breed have such attitude….I have a part siamese “moggie” and if I don’t give her enough attention she gets into my laundry and shreds whole toilet rolls across the floor…...only yesterday she wasted not one but FOUR!!!!!! (Darn it! she is such a unit!!) LOL

Wendy, I am so very happy that so many people appreciated this stunning photograph, which were so revered in Egyptian times. Bast or Bastet was the cat goddess and local deity of the town of Bubastis “Tell or Per-Bast in Egyptian, where her cult was centered. Bubastis was named after her. Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt, and consequently depicted as a fierce lioness. Indeed, her name means (female) devourer. As protector, she was seen as defender of the Pharaoh, and consequently of the later chief male deity, Ra, who was a solar deity also, gaining her the titles Lady of Flame and Eye of Ra. Bastet has been an influential figure in literature since her cult was first formed around the Second Dynasty. From appearances in early papyri manuscripts to references in modern culture, she is a popular figure both as the paradigmatical cat and as a goddess. This is wonderful work Wendy, the whole collection is stunning and inspires me greatly! I am so pleased that the Egyptians and their customs are featuring in our daily lives. I end this with a proverb taken for an Ancient Temple in Egypt: Listen to your conviction, even if they seem absurd to your reason. Thank you for sharing this wonderful work with us all! You are an inspiration to me! Thinking of you, as always!Sx

  • Wendy Slee replied

Sophie!!! Thank you so very much for adding this information to my artwork. I really appreciate it, as I have read this before about Bastet, but could not find it to put in with my images….. It is fascinating to learn about the ancient ones and their magic and meaning…...and realize the symbolism is still alive for us today….
Thank you for the wisdom too….
Listen to your convictions, even if they seem absurd to your reason.
    You are so appreciated!
