Creation

Wendy Slee

Creation

She drifts in the womb of the world,
holding the history of the universe in her heart,
waiting,
waiting,
waiting,
for the time when it will be safe to emerge,
a time when humanity has forgotten their craziness,
and resolved their greed, and healed their emptiness,
a time when they will truly honour creation.

this is absolutely fantastic Wendy and the words so appropriate. How did you capture the whale image…................please do tell

  • Wendy Slee replied

Hi Chris, thanks for your kind comments…... I actually photographed the embryo at the Albany Whale world, where they have turned the original whaling station into a museum to ironically, honour and protect whales…... but this little one was a victim of the slaughter when its own Mother was taken during the days the whale station was still in operation…..(prior to 1978)

    Gasp!!!
this sent shivers down my spine,, it is most beautiful!!! x

  • Wendy Slee replied

Do you know what? It did the same to me when I had the idea and placed that little blue whale embryo in there…shivers through me!. I just sat there in silence for ages…... thank you so much!

Oh Wendy, this is beautiful and very apropos to Doomsday Clock

for the time when it will be safe to emerge,
a time when humanity has forgotten their craziness,
and resolved their greed, and healed their emptiness,
a time when they will truly honour creation.

That time may be after we are gone. Beautiful writing, beautiful image.

  • Wendy Slee replied

Yes I also thought that…..thank you so much for your heartfelt comments. xx

Wendy this is such a poignant piece and takes me back to my school days when I had to study a poem called Prayer Before Birth. It has stayed with me and I will share it here with you, because Society really need to start taking responsibility for what is happening in the World. If you don’t like it then please delete it!
    Prayer before Birth
    By Louis MacNeice

I am not yet born; O hear me.
Let not the bloodsucking bat or the rat or the stoat or the
    club-footed ghoul come near me.

I am not yet born, console me.
I fear that the human race may with tall walls wall me,
with strong drugs dope me, with wise lies lure me,
on black racks rack me, in blood-baths roll me.

I am not yet born; provide me
With water to dandle me, grass to grow for me, trees to talk
to me, sky to sing to me, birds and a white light
in the back of my mind to guide me.

I am not yet born; forgive me
For the sins that in me the world shall commit, my words
when they speak to me, my thoughts when they think me,
my treason engendered by traitors beyond me,
my life when they murder by means of my
hands, my death when they live me.

I am not yet born; rehearse me
In the parts I must play and the cues I must take when
old men lecture me, bureaucrats hector me, mountains
frown at me, lovers laugh at me, the white
waves call me to folly and the desert calls
me to doom and the beggar refuses
my gift and my children curse me.

I am not yet born; O hear me,
Let not the man who is beast or who thinks he is God
    Come near me.

I am not yet born; O fill me
With strength against those who would freeze my
humanity, would dragoon me into a lethal automaton,
would make me a cog in a machine, a thing with
one face, a thing, and against all those
who would dissipate my entirety, would
blow me like thistledown hither and
    thither or hither and thither
    like water held in the
    hands would spill me.

Let them not make me a stone and let them not spill me.
    Otherwise kill me.

Words so true of the world today. I despair. Poor sad little unborn of a higher and more ancient plane than ours. May you and yours find peace.

  • Wendy Slee replied

Aaah Jenny, I know….when I saw this little one floating in a bottle, at a place where whales were once slaughtered (ok, so now the place is an honouring of whales and the ocean, and a warning about the brutality of that age old industry) my heart felt sick. BUt I knew that if I took a photo and then released her into the universe, it might be a way of setting her little spirit free. Thank you for recognizing what I was trying to do here….. smiles…..

  • louisegreen

    louisegreen

A fitting tribute to the Record Keeper of the oceans Wendy….I pray we all take it to heart.

Beautifully written….my heart is crying tears to the senseless slaughter of the whales.

  • Wendy Slee replied

Thank you from my heart Louise…..it was so sad to see this unborn baby in a glass container, never to grace the oceans or swim freely….I wanted to release her to the universe so she could….. I am so glad you see things the way I do…..

  • Wendy Slee replied

Hi Roy, thanks so much… I saw this baby blue whale in a specimen jar at a Whaling Museum….and thought I would take a photo and honour it in my art in some way…...to give it the “life” that it had missed out on, so to speak…... so this is what I have done here….

  • lianne

    lianne

Oh my Lord, how totally awesome this is – what an incredibly moving and powerful image and your verse, as always, so very profound. Wendy everything you do just rocks me back on my heels, makes me stop short, take a second look at myself, at others and certainly at the universe of which I’m a responsible part. Incredible. Wow.

  • Wendy Slee replied

Now you have made me cry. I am so grateful that my work moves you like this. I feel so deeply the words or images I create, at times I sit here resonating with great joy or crying silently as I create ….. I feel such emotion in the gift of creation and being able to share things that touch others or move or inspire them…... But I never think for a moment of it touching other people in a similar way.
Your words are such confirmation for me that I am bringing forth a positive message…..
It was so wonderful to finally put my work together into a book…...now I just have to find a publisher as self publishing is so expensive…. Your words are so positive and encouraging for me as they help me to believe I have something to offer others through my art…..(so much of the time, I feel it is just for me, and that maybe I should just keep it that way…..... lol)
thank you thank you thank you….....from my heart to yours….

  • lianne

    lianne

Self-publishing does not have to be that expensive Wendy – it depends on who you choose and whether you can promote yourself effectively. If you’ve created your book already in PDF format then I’ll bubble with a suggestion that handles both areas rather effectively – lol.

  • Wendy Slee replied

I did the blurb thing….. the result was so very stunning, but oh so expensive…and way out of reach of all those who would buy such a book….
    I need new ideas!!!!

  • Watertoy

    Watertoy

    Magnificent.

  • Wendy Slee replied

it’s not often someone leaves a bottle of wine on my art page….especially not one of this calibre!!! thank you!

  • Watertoy

    Watertoy

It’s actually a real photo of a full bottle which I have in my cupboard. The thought of opening it and drinking it @ $25 per mouthful is really scary !

  • Wendy Slee replied

Hah! I bet!!! I remember drinking Dom Perignon when I was young, and having hamburgers with it…… and being so drunk that I really could have been drinking $5 passion pop! ha ha ha…..(cringe, what a waste!!)
As for the Grange….hmmm….. maybe create lots of art with the bottle in it…..make it LAST!!!

  • Dan Shalloe

    Dan Shalloe

This is about as unique as they get – the very definition of creativeness, originality and powerful inspirational thought. I find myself desperately seeking words, and failing. In doubt, I shall just resort to a somewhat clichéd, but indubitably sincere, WOW!

Wendy, I do not know what to say…this image stopped me dead in my tracks. Emotions swirled. This is very powerful. My heart breaks for this whale fetus and its mother. Thank you for creating this art and the sentiment that goes along with it. Unforgettable.

  • Wendy Slee replied

I am moved by your beautiful comment….. I felt the same sense of deep silence when I saw this life cut short and placed forever in this “space”......somehow I just knew I had to honour both the baby and its mother and give them life in some way befitting them…...
