Flat Earth Theory
Fog forecast yesterday morning so I thought I’d introduce the 5D to the Sylvania Jetty.
I was setting up when another photographer turned up with her Nikon and Tripod with the same idea. So we shot side by side for an hour or so
Canon 5D 16mmL zoom at ISO100 and f11 1.6 seconds with a ND8 filter.

Well I’d say the Canon got the better angle than the Nikoff. These shots look simple, but they are not. It is easy enough to get the centre of the lens pointing at the end of the boardwalk, but it’s all about the height of the camera relative to the horizontal planks and the distance of the camera/tripod from the “base” of the boardwalk. You nailed it. I tried the same type of shot at North Narrabeen Pool last night and did not. The right perspective eluded me. This is an awesome photograph.

I was on a boat ramp beside it and my nikon friend was doing the straight down the jett shot. I got the camera as high on the tripod as possible and we seem to look down a little. Thanks a lot Peter, Preciated!

AS Peter said, there’s more to this than one might imagine. It works really well.:)

I agree on the “look down a little” result. It just makes this image stand out so much. Too much height and it will look flat and one-dimensional. Too little height and you have a completely different, minimalist, look, especially in placing the line of the boardwalk to match the horizon. But this is way different. This is a perfect blend of the vertical angle looking down with the distance between the camera and the boardwalk. Damn impressive. I need to remember this. Cheers

Well done, hard to get this type of angle and height at a lot of jettys but you have done so well for this shot, superb.

If you kept adding boards to this jetty until you finally came to the back end would you prove the world is flat?
David Haworth replied
I did the experiment but about 3.5 Km out I fell off the edge of the world. Good job I had my ankle strap on!
