2012 - Calm Before The Storm
Since our dawn, man has always looked to the stars to make sense of the chaos that we create. And to me, it only seems fitting that our future should lie beyond our own planet, if we don’t mess it all up first. The main tone underlying this work is that we should look at our history in order to understand our future – and I’ve used the Mayans as a reference to the good and bad things that we have achieved.
I’d like to think that this being dominating the artwork could very well be us, in our own creation of what we believe as interstellar beings. Kind of like life imitating art. The dome of his head is actually Mars, a planet many have speculated that could be an older version of our own Earth and a glimpse into our future.
Behind the his head, and also tattooed on his brow, is part of the very advanced Mayan long-count calendar, which runs out on the 22nd December 2012 – a date that many historians are looking forward to, especially given today’s fragile climate. Some speculate that it could mark an approximate date to the end of life as we know it. Which ties in with other totally unrelated theories about our oil crisis, global warming, and so on.
In his eyes, he sees a horizon of fire which symbolizes the earth cleansing itself, although we’d see it as mass destruction. This is synonomous with our understanding of the Mayan civilization and how it overpopulated and crumbled under the high demand of such an over-indulgent society.
The moon shots are from the recent lunar eclipse. I included this because the moon plays such an important part in our life, and the stabalisation of the planet – it moves away from the Earth at just under 4cm each year. Finally, I’ve used the Mayan Chichen Itza temple at the bottom of the piece as a stairway to the heavens, common with Mayan, Egyptian, and other beliefs.

IS SOMETHING GONNA HAPPEN IN 2012?
Peter Greig
Probably nothing. But since the Mayans had such an advanced working knowledge of the stars, combined with their calendar that even accounted for leap years, lots of theorists speculate that the Mayans might have known that the earth’s cycle will complete itself. Funny since we’re actually due for an ice age.
Man, I just read my blurb on this artwork again this morning. I sound like a nutter! haha.
Rachesimages
cool image and description to go with it , NO i don’t think you sound like a nutter these things could well be possible and i am more inclined to beleive in this way of thinking than any of the religions and theorys about our creator and where we came from and how it will all end ( the world as we know it ), this makes more sense to me, nice one
FabiaN
mayans where very advanced in their astronomical research – funny how when they were first discovered they were thought as been savages and thats right they set the calendar to end in the year 2012
excellent image man good work eyecatching and interesting

Nice work Peter! I like it.
You aren’t a “nutter” – some earth changes and a consciousness shift do seem to be happening… If nothing else, a working together is anticipated to combat global warming and other world problems – with a new respect for the earth.

I think this piece is some what amazing in so many ways. I love the meaning you’ve built into it. Such depth in a piece such as this, gives it so much flavor and intrigue. The composition of it is so well balanced, I feel like I stare at the picture for ages. Also, the way you have blended the layers together has been done just right. A nice cool colour palette also adds to the composition and balances it out nicely.
Bravo my man.

Holy hell. This is an incredible piece of work!! I have been filling myself with all the information on this I can for quite some time now. It is strange how so many things lead into this specific date. I am sure the Mayans knew something that we do not. I believe things are gonna get worse before they get better. Maybe this is going to be the step to make the relationship to the consciousness, earth and each other as a whole. Unfortunately it always seems to take catastrophy to make people more aware and compassionate. I think this may be what will occur. Material Possession is gonna take one hell of an Excorsism to wake people up.

Ever since ! was about 12(now i am 21)-I have studied different Philosophy and mythologies!! I have always been very intrigued with the Mayan Culture and of the Itza Temples and how the doorways line up with the 9 cycles of the sun and moon!! Only when scientist figured out that there were different cycles did they know that the Mayan Pyramids had been aligned to it all along!! They are a genius culture and yes, they did see so far in advance through the stars!!
12-21-12 is a date that has always stood out to me and combining their beliefs with prophecies of others such as Nostradamus I think it will be an asteroid that only that Mayans have seen! but thats just my own prediction>>This is a really great piece!!>>congrats on getting on the home page!! Much respect>>Nina

Unbelievable process and technique. You have really gained a similar grasp on the concept as I. There is much I can say, but I am sure you already understand. Great job though my friend, the world needs more fine art that is oriented toward this sort of ideology.

Great image and a poignant message Peter.
I agree with you that we can, and must, learn from history as to determining our future. The mistakes of the past are the lessons for the future. I don’t believe in prophecies but your premise is correct in that we are over exploiting the resources this planet has to offer at our peril. Along with environmental concerns as climate change, pollution, loss of natural habitat etc we are going to have to clean up our act if we want a healthy future.
Cheers.
