Artist's Description

The Quabbin Reservoir was created in the 1930’s to provide high quality drinking water for the Boston region. Over 2500 people in the towns of Enfield, Dana, Greenwich, Prescott, and parts of seven other towns, were forced to give up their homes in the Swift River Valley to make this project possible.
Contrary to popular myth, there are no church steeples sticking out of the water, nor any buildings remaining beneath the water. For water quality reasons, all buildings and trees were removed from the 25,000 acres of land flooded to form the Quabbin Reservoir. Enfield was incorporated in 1816. Enfield’s last town meeting was held April 9, 1938, 19 days before it was disincorporated. The last residents were evacuated early in 1939.
Here, at this Overlook, they can sit and remember what once was.
