Migration of the Monarch Butterfly by

Monarch butterflies are not able to survive the cold winters of most of the United States. If the monarch lives in the Eastern states, usually east of the Rocky Mountains, it will migrate to Mexico and hibernate in oyamel fir trees. If the monarch butterfly lives west of the Rocky Mountains, then it will hibernate in and around Pacific Grove, California in eucalyptus trees. Monarch butterflies use the very same trees each and every year when they migrate, which seems odd because they aren’t the same butterflies that were there the last year. These are the new fourth generation of monarch butterflies, so how do they know which trees are the right ones to hibernate in? The flower bush is a buddleia, also called butterfly bush.

Love this beautiful capture of the monarchs on the buddleia! Another favourite.

  • Thank you so much for your comment and for the fave! I do love the monarch migration, but it isn’t exactly the same time every year. If I go over early there are hundreds, but they are all fluttering around and I end up with many blurry shots. This time I was a bit later, it was cooler and they were slower, easier to photograph.☺

Wonderful capture Jade! It’s not easy to capture 3 butterflies on a flower. One is hard enough. :)) Great job!

  • Thank you for noticing the 3! With butterflies…you just can’t pose them! lol I just take many shots and hope for a winner! ♥
