The baldfaced hornet is about 0.7 inch long and is black with whitish markings. It is technically a yellowjacket but builds a distinctive pear-shaped, basketball-sized nest covered with grayish paperlike material. It usually constructs its nest in a tree or under the eave of a building. These baldfaced hornets have very creatively placed the image of a one eyed witch over the entrance of their hive! Can you see her tall pointed hat, empty eye socket and open mouth?
Baldfaced hornets are beneficial because they capture other insects. Since they tend to build their nests rather high up in trees and usually do not threaten humans, it is best to leave them alone. Two pale tan hornets are near the top of the nest.
Adjusted in Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Location: Quabbin Reservoir (an “accidental wilderness” that is home to an impressive variety of wildlife), Belchertown, Massachusetts (USA).

I hope that I don’t dream about it tonight!!! Still have memories of one that got into our bedroom, when we were on holiday in Cyprus. Great capture!
We climbed the stone lookout tower and there were dozens flying around inside. Everyone kept saying they were bees, but they didn’t seem agressive or angry, just very numerous! Once back on the ground, I decided to circle the base and spotted this giant hive. I zoomed in and was surprised to see the image of the witch! I considered outlining it in case it wasn’t obvious to others, but then it would no longer be all natural.
Sorry about that one that spoiled your night’s sleep! What a memory to have of your trip! ♥☺♫

Very cool Jade! Interesting capture!
Thanks so much! But I wonder if anyone sees the witch. Maybe I need to make a separate photo, sort of like an answer. ☺

That would be a good idea, Jade…I saw the witch only by looking at it for a few minutes and also by making it larger on my iPad… It’s a great capture!
