“The Remains of the Day” refers to evening, when a person can reflect on the day’s work. Evening is symbolic of old age, when one assesses one’s life, but “remains” suggests that there is time left, that there IS a future.
The Remains of the Day (1989) is the third published novel by Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro. (credit to Wikipedia)
