St. Augustine Lighthouse by

Did you know that high winds are a factor when you visit a lighthouse? On this day, May 9, 2007, we were only allowed to step out on the top platform a few visitors at a time. We were NOT allowed to circle the top due to 55 mph winds. This doesn’t sound like too much, but apparently it is, and a guard was posted to enforce this restriction. It was frustrating to me, though some chose not to venture outside at all!
(Someone on WebShots asked me to let her order this and I decided I’d rather sell it myself, so I uploaded it to RB about June 15, 2009)

The St. Augustine Lighthouse was built in Florida in 1874.

Great shot, love lighthouses and this is a particularly pretty one. I didn’t know that about the wind either, one would think they’ve survived huricanes in Florida with higher winds than that. Funny huh.

  • Not really. ☺ The concern was not for the lighthouse, but for the tourists. The wind can actually blow you off the outside platform beyond a certain wind speed, and 55 mph apparently exceeds the level at which a human is able to grip. The guard was large and he wasn’t joking! lol I did try to change his mind. ☺ This reminds me of a story I read in the news about a photographer who wanted to experience a hurricane on the beach. He was eventually able to crawl to his car on his hands and knees! Wind can be a powerful force. Thanks so much for commenting! I share your love of lighthouses and am happy there is an effort to preserve them. ☺
