Artist's Description

Longwood’s Conservatory is one of the world’s great greenhouse structures. It shelters 20 indoor gardens and 5,500 types of plants. The Conservatory was built in 1919 and has been periodically expanded and renovated. At present, there are 195,668 square feet—or 4.5 acres—of covered display, production, and research greenhouses.
Inside the Conservatory is the Orchid Room where this yellow trio can be found. This room houses the best of Longwood’s more than 3,200 different types of orchids. At any one time approximately 200 to 500 plants at peak bloom add color and scent the air. Orchids never seem to have a bad day, in contrast to gardenias which seem to wilt within hours or white roses which always seem to have brown edges.

Thanks to Michael May, these orchids now have a name: Miltonias are often called Pansy Orchids because their flat-faced, open flowers resemble pansies in shape and markings.
