Just knew to this journaling business, but I’ll give it a go. Hot and muggy on the downs today,my sister and neice have just left to go back to N.S.W. I am working on a mixed media painting that seems to be taking along time to finish, but i do put things off a bit hoping that when I come back to it some sudden inspiration will tell me where to put what. The work area is abit messy as I am working with tar and shellac on parts of the canvas ,it gives alovely honey colour and they repel each other when they meet .I am so pleased to have had positive comments on my work but I am not too thin skinned so any constructive critism is welcome .So many talented artists on Redbubble it is abit overwhelming but great I love it. I went to see Margaret Olley ’s exhibition on Tuesday I am not into too much traditional work these days but to see her colours and composition in the ‘flesh’ ....well she is a master. Also saw Andy Warhol it was interesting and Im glad I saw it. Going off now to tackle “Ravens Poem”. Well at least I have a name for it.

Can’t say I enjoy hot and muggy, but the weather here is just as extreme – cold, cold, cold, and snow-covered!
Suellen, tell me a bit about ” tar and shellac”, if you would. I use a product called “tar gel” that I combine with acrylic paint to form a very shiny, stringy texture on my paintings. Is that anything like what you are doing?

I was introduced to tar and shellac at a workshop, the tar is called Ormanoid (a brush on bitumen)mixed with kerosene to make it the texture of milk then decant into a saucebottle (squeeze type with nozzle lid ,it is easier to place on your canvas this way.Shellac is in the form of golden flakes you can also buy this at hardware shops mix this with methylated spirits intil flakes have dissolved. When tar and shellac collide on the gessoed surface of your 600g watercolour paper or canva they repel each other making lovely patterns like leopard print or the patterns you see on tree bark.Make sure you use safety measures when handling . The tutor said she has used tar and shellac on her paintings for 10 years and no deteriation when the support has been primed with gesso. Thanks for your interest AlterdIIIus.
