Black Bear Ursus americanus has been the symbol of the Great Smoky Mountain NP since about 1934, when it was established.
They are omnivores and feed on whatever food the particular season has to offer. When you feed a bear in the Smokies it can result in the bear having to be put to sleep. When they get use to humans and human food, any attack, whether provoked by a tourist or just in play will result in the bear’s death. So please keep your distance and never feed wildlife. Image taken along Newfound Gap Road, GSMNP.
