This hornet’s nest isn’t something you want to walk up to and hit with a stick. They can be real persistent about taking revenge. They seem to know where a bullet came from when you shoot into one also. Giving up, just isn’t something they do readily. Just one can bring up many whelps a whole nest could kill you, whether you’re allergic to them or not……I remember years ago while some of us were out hunting in the winter, we came upon one. One of the guys decided since they were no hornets around it, to cut it down and take home. He just threw it in the back of the truck and put it in the shed, which was heated, when he got home. He called a few hours later to tell about the whelps he had and shed full of angry hornets. They were dormant in the nest till it heated up to room temperature. Seemed like all of them decided to come out and show they didn’t appreciate their new home……Image taken in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain NP

These nests fascinate me. It is so hard to believe such a small thing can create such a huge nest. Fantastic capture!!!

When my daughter in law was small, her family went to Cades Cove. They got out, to walk a bit, and got into a yellow jackets nest!!! Well, there were 5 kids, and they covered up the kids, and were in their long hair.. " the girls"…….and people rushed to try and help….. and got them back to the station. But it was a miracle that none had that big of a reaction, although it was bad enough. But NONE will go back to the Cove either!!. :) I can NOT imagine that happening to me. Just the thought… UGH!!!! Many will make nests in the ground, and we have had them in our yard. If you mow over them, if you don’t watch, they will cover you up, before you realize it. Nothing to play around with. Oh,,,, by the way… great picture! Hope you used a zoom lens!!!!!!… xx

Great image and great story (ouch) Gary. I think we’ve all had contact with them at some stage. I was pruning once and put my head into a tree branch without knowing there was a nest tucked inside. I think I did the highland fling better than a scotsman. Gary I love the gallery of images alongside this shot – they are perfection mate!

When I come across one of these in the woods, I find another direction.

Doesn’t bear thinking about Gary. Glad the sound of your shutter didn’t waken ’em up. Great photo!

So are these the Pinatas that you tell tourists about?

The park rangers love to hide pinatas in the forest as a surprise for tourists, they put leaves on them to disguise and hide them. Hit it and you will get lots of candy!
