Artist's Description

It has long been disputed how Cades Cove got the name. The most popular is for the Cherokee Chief Kade. He once laid claim to land in the cove. The next most compelling is for another Cherokee Chief,Abrams. His wife was called Kate by the settlers. There was also a family of settlers called Cades that once lived there. One of the old Indian name for the cove was Tsiyahi which meant Otter’s Place

The population of the cove reached about 685 with 132 households in the 1850’s.The soil became overworked and the west was opening up for settlement so about half moved on. Before the park took over they were back up to bout 500 people. This part of the park is now rich in history of those early pioneers.
