Artist's Description

The Catawba (rhododendron catawbiense) are the beauty of the high mountains. In the Smokies it is found above 3500 feet, and is the pinkish purple rhododendron. In some places they cover entire balds with their beauty. The leaves are similar to the rosebay but are a little smaller and rounder on the tip. The early bee keepers had to pay attention to where they placed their hives as honey made from either the Catawba or Rosebay is toxic…Some of the places these beauties can be seen are near New Found Gap on US 441, Andrews Bald, and Alum Cave Bluff Trail…Outside the park along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Roan Mountain of upper east Tennessee is know for the showing there.
