Days Of Old
I enjoy photographing the foggy autumn mornings. I also dabble some with my family’s genealogy. I find it interesting to see how my forefathers lived. This Photo is a combination of the two interests. I think the times past is important and should be preserved.
This is Mingus Mill located on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountain N.P.It is one of the many historic structures preserved by the Park Services. It was built in 1886.It is one of two operating grist mills in the GSMNP.These mills were a vital part of the communities of that era.The people of that era could grow there grain but still needed to have it ground so they could have there day to day bread.
I feel it’s important to call peoples attention to structures like this. They may then have a better understanding of those wishing support to help preserve them.So our grandchildren can see the struggles of how we became a nation

Excellent B&W photo. Well done!

Great B and W shot – I like the silky water too.
If you have frequent access to this place why not do a similar shot with the water caught on a quick exposure with something coloured floating down it – a rose maybe – just an idea

I agree, i think children should be able to see firsthand what life was like long before their time and the struggles faced by those trying to live in those times. This is a beautiful image and I thank you very much for the reminder!

The old mill makes a great subject Gary and black and white gives it that classic timeless appearance, very good depth and tonal range, I like how the eye is led up the water shute and on towards the mill, well captured and presented,
Regards, Rod.

I don’t usually like B&W just too many years just doing that on the enlarger, but this one is exceptional in it’s composition. Great job.

An excellent image and description. I photographed one in Byron, Georgia not to long ago, but it was falling in at the time and now it is even worse. It is so sad to see history just rotting away. I am very glad to see this one so well taken care of.

Beautiful shot of a flue (maybe spelled wrong) Nice story to go with the photo. Used to see these in the apple orchards in eastern Washington in the 1970’s but they started disappearing. I don’t know what’s more fun Photography or genealogy (been working on mine since 1975). Luckily they can go hand in hand.
Kim Roper

“A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.” ~Ansel Adams

Nice composition of this shot. I have been here a few times myself and it is a challenge to get the angle just right on this much. Nice job and I agree that exposing structures such as this is a great way to preserve them. I have been an association member of the smokies long before I moved here. With all the visitation to this National treasure it is vital that we continue to preserve it for future generations. Thanks for a great picture and being part of the solution not the problem
