In Its Hay Days

This may not look to be that comfortable to ride. It was a lot easier that raking hay by hand. This old horse drawn hay rake could rake bout what 8 men could do in a given time. That would leave a lot of time for other chores. More often then not, one of the younger kids would drive the rake, and the older kids and men would gather and put up the hay. This was pulled thru the field of cut hay. The tines would collect the hay. When they were full the lever would be pull releasing the hay in a pile. Then it would be gathered and taken to where they stored it. This may be crude by today’s standards but in its hay days this was a major improvement to putting up hay…….image taken at the Mountain Farm Museum at the Cherokee NC entrance to the Great smoky Mountain NP

Love the play on words by the way…just read your notes and I also think that sitting on this wouldn’t bother a kid the way it would us. They probably thought of this as fun and it would certainly beat the manual labor they would have been doing otherwise. It makes me think of a shot I wish I’d gotten years ago. Steve and I were sitting at Carl’s drive in having a burger while this old fellow(probably about the age I am right now lol) was trying to plow his garden with a mule and the mule literally sat down on the job! It was so funny to see with that guy whaling on that mule with a stick and it just sitting there on its hind quarters acting like he was just a pesky ol’ fly.

What is really amazing is that we have the exact same old rusty machine outside my parent’s farmhouse here in the south west of western australia….(He has a museum for farming history and to honour the “old ways”)......
