Methodist Church III
The church house in the early days not only served as a place of worship but of a gathering place for the community. It was a place to meet and get caught up on the area happenings or for singles to meet possible mates. In many areas it would serve as a school a few months a year.
In 1902 this structure and its furnishings were reportedly the work of one man. J. D. McCampbell, a blacksmith and carpenter, built it in 115 days of $115. Afterward, he became its preacher for many years. It is located in the Cades Cove area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park
There are not many records of the early Methodist Church. The Cades Cove Methodist Church is included among those of the Holston Conference’s Little River Circuit in 1830.The cemetery contains at least 100 graves and is the second oldest church cemetery in the Cove. Methodists were not as dominant as Baptists in the Cove, but they served the community well.
