Groundhog day

No matter how much
I shout
Scream
Or struggle
I can not
Get out.
There is a film
Over my mouth
My eyes are glued shut
The buzzing in my head
Deafening
With horror I realise
I’m trapped
My efforts to escape
Quadruple

I awaken
Relief floods through me;
“T’was a dream
‘Tis all!”
I go to turn over
And can’t
Far worse;
This time,
There’s
An elephant sitting on
My chest
I am surrounded by a
Tepid fluid
Nostrils filling fast I am
Frantic to breathe

I wake
To see
Me
Lying in bed
A pale lifeless corpse.
Above
I am free
At last!
I go to
Float away
But my freedom
Is an illusion
My umbilical cord
Anchors me
My grip on reality
A farce,
I let it go
To find
I’m earthly bound once more
