Oh no
It’s gone!
When did it slip?
My heart in
My mouth;
I surreptitiously
Look about…
Do they know
Will they tell
What will
They think…
With trembling fingers
I try to
Catch the ghost
That is my reflection;
Only to find
It’s me…
I step back
In horror and
Cut my foot
On one of
A thousand shards;
My broken mask
Lay at my feet…
No matter how carefully
I pick up the pieces
I am continuously cut to
My core;
Sorrow’s blood has
Pooled beneath
Threatening to drown my
Flagging spirit…
In despair
I let my daily guise
Slip through my
Bloodied life
Lay down to allow the
Tide to come…
But in its stead
It recedes…
Sphagnum moss
Cushions my rest
A stream gurgles
With respite
I slacken my thirst
But it is
The face in the water
That is
The surprise;
For she is smiling back
I reach out to
Touch her…
As so she
Touches me…
The water sprite
The woman
The one who
Dwells below;
Are one and
The very same….

Artist's Description

i woke with the imagery of my face shattered beneath my feet…
Do we wear masks? present differently depending on where or who we’re with?
if so is it tiring? is there a sense of loss or unreality?
to let go these masks and allow the different aspects of self to come together and just be-come is what this poem is about…
