“Do not fear
What you cannot see;”
Is the mantra the child
Chanted to fall asleep
Her life thus far
Is an anathema
To this very verse
Yet to survive
This is what she lives by
Her waking moments
So unsure
Yes she has a roof
Over her head
A school to attend
Food in her tummy
She know she is lucky
For she is TOLD all the time!
But when she walks
Through T H A T door
Or
Closes her eyes
For just a moment
She NEVER knows
What can come next
Her stomach screws so tight
That it strangles her throat
Her heart
Quails at the slighted sound
Yet she does not how
To be a GOOD girl
Everything she does
Is wrong
Not straight
Not clean
Not smart
She is a STUPID, STUPID child!
Her darkest secret
Is to be found out…
…A Faker
…A Liar
So she presents
This intelligent
Bright
Happy object
That is SHE
To the Outside just in case

The lessons were learnt
The child became a woman;
Eternally grateful,
For though the unstitching
Was distressing
From the examination
Came understanding
Giving her the gift
Of insight

Her mantra remains
To this day
