Forbearance

The breach seemed complete
The wall had cracked
To the extent that
All that appeared to
Hold it up was the
Interwoven vines
That had long ago died
And yet…
It held
Of course this only
Escalated the attack
Tunnels were dug
Fires ignited
Balled and thrown
The foundations laid
A millenia ago
Were undeterred
This story had played out
Time and again
Pitted
Blackened
Crazed
Against all odds
The wall remains
Even to this day

The old man’s back
Warmed by the radiant heat
From the stone wall
Gazed inward
To his own story
And saw how his long life was
Not unlike this wall’s
But time does not stand still
And so it was
That a cry drew his attention
Outward
A grandchild
Newborn
Using the outcrop as support
He slowly stood
Musing
Though his journey was almost over
A part of him would go on
Through this young one
And like this wall
The little one will have
Challenges and pitfalls
But deep within
This wise man knows that
His line will endue
For like his ol’ friend
His forebears
Did not give in
Did not give up
And nor shall he

And so it is
That the child
Now a woman grown
Writes you thus
This day
