The ghosts

A thousand tiny eyes
Peer out
Glassy
No tears
No hope
No childhood
They see
War
Death
Destruction
Where are the mothers
The fathers
The aunties and uncles?
A pair of eyes
Disappear
Movement
A thin ragged boy
Hugs the shadows
Glancing nervously
At the sky
The sun is gone
Maybe he’ll be safe
This time…
The mountains of rubble
Make his journey difficult
But his determination
To find food over-rides
This hurdle
He said; “I tore out my heart
And threw it away…”
What will become
Of these lost little ones?
