A moment's respite

Sunshine streamed in
Through the big picture windows
Yet she sat
In the farthest corner
In the dark and shivered
Arms clamped around her knees
In a cold sweat
She rocked back and forth
Occasionally she’d stop
Cock her head
As though to listen
Eyes darting
Then squeeze shut
And with enormous force
Bash her head
On the wall behind
Over time
Morning became noon
And the light
Crept forward to touch her feet
Pooling with the red
That had trickled down
She began to trace
Her outline
In this pretty ink
Drawing dots and lines
She hennaed the
Life-line of her hands
Then holding them up
To the brightness streaming in
Translucent edges of herself
Glowing golden
Merging she became
Between
Intrigued by the
Regular movement just below
The pulse of life
At wrist’s end
It seemed to marry
With an internal beat
In her breast
And head
And all the while
The wheel of time turned further
And she became
Flooded in light
Now she seemed
To be illuminated
From within and out
The corners of her mind
Softened
Allowing her some freedom
From the dark for
The moment
