Umm, Someone Wanna' Give Me a Hand With This?

Umm, Someone Wanna' Give Me a Hand With This?

This one is a bit older than some of the stuff I’ve put up here so far. It was done a couple of years ago for a book titled “The Big Coat.” (Not exactly my best writing.) Despite the story not exactly standing the test of time I think this piece still holds up fairly well. No? Okay, maybe not, but could you at least pretend that it’s fantastic? Pretty please? Pretty please with sugar on top? Pretty please with sugar and a fresh, crisp new fifty dollar bill on top?

Beautiful Steven, so much detail, so many characters each with their individual personalties, fantastic (and i’m not pretending either)

  • Steven Novak replied

I do go a little detail happy from time to time, don’t I? ;) Thanks Pinky!

I’m not pretending either. Lots of super bright colors, and great expressions on the characters faces. Smiles from Jane.

  • Steven Novak replied

Thanks again Jane! I always thought I went a bit overboard with the colors, but maybe not.

no help needed….. the coat on the boy/fireman is an awesome undertaking in itself… the look on the fces in the crowd is icing on the cake… you rocked it…........b

  • Steven Novak replied

You’re the fourth person in eight or so comments to say that I either rocked or Roxed this piece. I can only assume that this is proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that I do indeed rock. And fairly hard nonetheless. ;) Thanks!

Do you draw all these out? You are a fantastic illustrator. You should illustrate for writers. Have you thought about something like that? I bet you already do.

  • Steven Novak replied

I’ve illustrated lots of things for lots of other people than myself, but it’s so much more fun to do it for my own stuff. (My giant ego wouldn’t have it any other way) ;)

  • Gaurav Dhup

MY EYES!!!! I don’t know where to look first… or look last for that matter! I may wind up just sitting here staring vacantly for the rest of the day… the kids will come home and find me comatose in front of this image.

    ooooooh…....

  • Steven Novak replied

Tell your kids they can send me money if they want, but a thank you note will do just fine. ;)

  • Steven Novak replied

There was actually a lot of marker used in this one (I think that’s why the colors are so wacko). I haven’t really used them since. Glad you like it though, thanks!

Even without the crisp new fifty dollar bill I would have to say this is fantastic artwork. No need for any of us to pretend it is fantastic … you must know fine well that it is fantastic ... stop being so modest :)) I consider myself a fan of your work … does that mean I get a free signed photograph and an invitation to your next exhibition … oh, and a plane ticket as I live in England :)

  • Steven Novak replied

Yes…ummm…next exhibition…ummm…sure…it’s being held in my living room. ;) Seriously though, thanks Dave. Coming from a talented individual such as yourself it’s appreciated.

I don’t believe I am going to type this but you can keep the $50 it’s AWESOME just on it’s own! but I’d love to see the book …. can I?? ... if you keep the cherry??? :o)

  • Steven Novak replied

Keep the fifty? You’re nuts, you know that right? ;) I never actually finished the book. The rest of the pages were just rough pencil sketches that I put together while making a dummy of it. (Plus, between you and me, these two illustrations were better than anything I wrote in the book anyway) ;)

  • Mia1

    Mia1

    Brilliant. What gorgeous detail.

  • Steven Novak replied

    Thanks Mia!

  • Arletta

    Arletta

    It’s quite interesting! Very detailed.

So, what’s wrong with the story? Can it be fixed? Can I help?

  • Steven Novak replied

The story was just sloppy and easy and predictable. (Even by children’s picture book standards) I’ve moved onto other stuff. thanks for the offer though! I’ll keep you in mind if I get stuck on a future project.

  • Cherie Dirksen

    Cherie Dirksen

  • adgray

    adgray

Hey and where’s my invite to your living room exhibition? I’ll give you a cherry [considering you didn’t offer us one with the fifty!] ok I wont be offended if you send me an autographed lithograph of this :o)

  • Steven Novak replied

The invite is in the mail. Of course I had no idea where to send t so I just threw it in the mail. Chances of it getting to you? 0% ;)
