Some Scars you Can't Hide

Some Scars you Can't Hide

No one ever notices the scar on his cheek. It could possibly be due to sloppy rendering on my part, but I’ve chosen instead to blame it on a craptacular scanner.

very interesting post steven…. the list of questions for this could get quite long…. thank you….........b

  • Steven Novak replied

That’s cool with me, I’m more of an open book then I really should be, or anyone want’s me to be. ;)

    awwwwwwww…......so so sad

  • Steven Novak replied

It is a little bit, yes. The next thing I pt up will be nothing but flowers, smiley faces, and cotton candy. Mmmmm…cotton candy. ;)

This brings up alot of emotion for me…... to see the hurt in his eyes makes me want to hug him. You can almost see that he is pulling inside himself… distancing himself from the hurt and turning himself into being cold and angry to survive..

  • Steven Novak replied

Stop looking into my brain. ;)

  • Kathryn Pedroza

Interesting. I saw the scare right away! Was this part of your book?

  • Steven Novak replied

Yes it was as a matter of fact. Good to her that everyone is noticing the scar. Maybe I’m just showing it to the wrong people.

  • Karin Taylor

Dunno whether it was the title, (probably) but I was drawn straight to the scar… I can see the brewing thoughts in his gaze and possibly the edge of his pain?........great looking kid! He wears not only a scar on his face, but his heart on his sleeve here

  • Steven Novak replied

No, no, no, it wasn’t the title (at least let’s pretend it wasn’t). It was my fantastic mastery of the pencil. ;) Thanks Karin. Glad you liked this one.

I thought the scar was a tear at first. I like that best about it, that the titular “scar” could be literal or not.

Reminds me of a kid I wonder what happened to sometimes.

  • Steven Novak replied

I will admit that the placement of the scar being sort of, kind of, tear like was in fact not intentional. (Even if it makes me look like a doofus). Just one of those happy mistakes I suppose. Thanks for the kind words.

Like this one especially! Image tells a sad story, but I guess that’s up to the viewer?

  • Steven Novak

    Steven Novak

I think everyone is going to read it as being something “sad” (hopefully) but just what is sad about it is where everyone is going to read something different into it. glad you like it Mariaan. Thanks!

Hey Steve…I thought it was tears as well on the thumbnail, but I’m mostly blind anyway. Mom always said that would happen eventually. ;)

I like it even more now that I see what it truly is. Your black and white stuff is truly awesome. – Earl

  • Steven Novak

    Steven Novak

Thanks Earl. In all honesty I think my black and whites are my best stuff as well, but it’s just so hard to find a market (especially in the kind of work I do) for black and white work, and it’s getting harder and harder with each passing day. You’re gong blind and I found a gray hair on my head the other day…we’re falling apart. ;)

I really love your b/w works!! They are very intense and strong….with a lot of soul!

  • Steven Novak replied

Thanks! I appreciate that. Most of the stuff though out the course of my life that I’ve made and would consider my “favorite” has almost exclusively been black and white.

Beautiful drawing, black and white has so much more emotion in it, I think, if done properly (which of course yours is!). You are very talented.

Awww…this is so very beautiful…. unfortunately it is so very true… but scar tissue shouldn’t hurt….it’s there if you look closely enough… but it shouldn’t be painful. It should just remind you that you shouldn’t go there again. Wen x

  • Steven Novak replied

    Nicely stated Wen. Thanks.

I noticed the scar right away too. Maybe some people are more sensitive to those things than others. Beautiful drawing. He does say so much with his hurt and defensive eyes. Smiles from Jane.

Wow this drawing reminds me of a conversation I had with my friends recently. One told me I had big eyes for an Asian. I said they always look smaller in photos. She said “Well that’s because you smile in photographs”. Then I replied “But I look different in photographs than I do in the mirror. Then she told me that maybe I think I see my reflection but really it is what I see of myself. The other friend with us then told a story of time she drew a self-portrait, and somebody asked why she drew a dark dot on her face (they had never noticed that she had one in reality). I guess we notice our own scars than others do, and we cannot hide them from ourselves. Even if we did conceal them, we cannot hide the truth that they exist.

  • Steven Novak replied

Take it from someone who has quite a few scars, you speak the truth.

  • CATNIPMEOW

(but i must say in a jesting spirit …. Photoshop can hide anything…tee-hee )

Steven, I have an idea for you, what if you colobarate with writers on red bubble and they will write a good stories for your amasing black and white images….it will be the begining with out end…and joy as well for them and for you.

  • Steven Novak replied

Honestly, I’m anything but a “joy” to work with. Just ask any of my editors. ;)

It may have been a ‘craptacular scanner’ but what a fantastic ourcome. It adds depth to the boy’s story.
    A beautiful piece.

  • Steven Novak replied

Thanks Rosemaree. If I can avoid the trappings of “craptacular scanners” and still get something decent out of it, I guess maybe I’m doing something right after all. ;)

I, too, keep returning to visit. Our little friend looks somewhat familiar… especially since your profile photo is next to it. Interesting, even if not intended. Ah, but we dreamers see what we want to see, eh? I enjoy your work, btw.

  • Steven Novak replied

What gave it away, the hair? Actually…let me just say that the book the illustration is fairly personal and just leave it at that. ;)

  • Paul Tupman

This is a very powerful image Steven… congratulations on creating something that can create such emotion. Wow, you are really drawn into this… the distant gaze off into the black void is very poignant. As ever, your B+W work is skillfully done and the attention to detail brilliant.
