Check Your Candy for Razor Blades!
Every Halloween my mother sifted through my Halloween candy when I got home because she said that she needed to check it for “razor blades.”
Needless to say, she never found one.
I actually did the kids in this piece about a year ago, but never dropped in a background. After digging it up last week I thought that maybe, just maybe I should finish it…you know, rather than simply letting it get crumpled up in my closet.
I think I made the right choice.

Definitely the right choice (finishing it I mean)! It’s cool, lots of fun :)
Steven Novak replied
Thanks! I agree, finishing it was the right thing to do. Plus, it didn’t take me long…which is also a good thing. ;)
jerry alcantara
another beautiful work..bravo!
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Jerry!
Cindy RN
haha…my Mom did the same thing…now you can go and it get it x-rayed for free lol…
Steven Novak replied
I think if my wife and I had a kid she would be checking the candy for sprinkles of Anthrax or something. Maybe it’s a female thing. ;)
Chanel2
Glad you decided to finish it Steven. Wonderful work.
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Chanel, so am I!
Jan Piller
I used to check my son’s candy too – hahahaha – I think back now and think it must have been terrifying for kids to be told we have to “check for razor blades first” hahahahaha
Steven Novak replied
My mom always liked the people who gave out pennies because of the lack of “razor blades”...me, not so much. ;)
Shannon Rene' ...
omg….i saw an old school horror flick where a guy did that…but he put them in apples…damn, i cant remember what movie it was but in the end, his wife ended up cooking him an apple pie with the apples! hahaha…im a dork!
Steven Novak replied
I’m not even going to question the very obvious logistical flaws of that scene. I do however need to see that movie though. ;)
Lisa Jewell
You certainly made the right choice….
Oh this would be soooooooo perfect as the front cover of a kids book…...
Lisa Jewell
PS – I’ve never celebrated Halloween – My tale is about water slides, my mother was obsessed with checking them for razor blades before I was allowed down one….she never did find one ;)
Steven Novak replied
I was never able to go down water slides not because of razor blades, but because the idea of human pee filled water always weirded me out. Same with public pools. Don’t laugh at me. ;) Glad you liked the piece Lisa, thanks!
CATNIPMEOW
Very whimsical….......love the costumes…...especially the cat boy ! MEow …....
Steven Novak replied
I’m thinking about wearing the same thing this Halloween…though I don’t think it’ll look as “whimsical.” ;)
clarkey
I’m glad you finished this, Steve. It’s lots of fun and bright colours, with great costumes and kids having fun. Beautifully done.
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Clarkey! I think I made the right choice in finishing it as well. Turned out decent. (Which is rare for me to say) ;)
Evangeline Than
She may not have found any razor blades, but did you find a few Snickers bars missing? ;) Mums are great.
Great colours and energy – I can see this in a children’s book!
Steven Novak replied
So that’s what happened to my extra Snickers! How could I have been so blind? ;)
Danielle Daven...
I love it Steven.. and your title cracked me up! Halloween is my favorite time of year ;-) I remember my mom going through my candy too… and never finding anything… great urban legend though!
Steven Novak replied
Halloween WAS my favorite time of the year, these days not so much. I’ve turned into a crabby old man. In fact, I turn off the lights and pretend I’m not home…sigh…I’m an awful person. ;)
ToastedGhost
Excellent work!
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Ghost!
Seth Weaver
I remember hearing this when I was younger and especially when my kids came along but it was more razor blades in the apples. A marvelous illustration full of childhood whimsy and mischief.
Steven Novak replied
You’re the second person to mention apples with razor blades, which is something I had never heard before. Glad you liked this Seth, thanks!
Shannon Rene' ...
man, I wish I could remember what movie it was….I’ll have to ask a friend of mine, hes a big b-horror film guy!
Walker Everette
Razors blades are full of vitamins and minerals.
Steven Novak replied
Indeed they are…and they’re the last vitamins and minerals that you’ll ever need. ;)
jaycee
Wow you are seriously talented dear Steven :)
Steven Novak replied
Thank you!
Seth Weaver
Steven it is a lot easier to put a razor blade in an apple than in a candy bar per U.S. police departments. You’d put sewing needles or pins in a candy bar. Happy Halloween to All!
KristinFreeman
This is great! it brings back so many memories. My dad definitely ate our candy bars as soon as we went to sleep. As if we didn’t know :)
Steven Novak replied
Dads are sneaky like that. ;) Thanks Kristin!

And the cycle of insanity and irrational fears continues… ;) Thanks Christine!

I’m glad you finished it Steve : ) great result! I’m kinda glad we don’t celebrate it here after hearing about the razor blades…and equally disturbed that Seth has this information! lol Wen xox
Steven Novak replied
Ya, Seth’s knowledge of deadly objects hidden in food was a bit scary, wasn’t it? ;) Thanks Wen!
