Makin' Stuff While My Buddies Watch
I did this illustration in college for a children’s book I had written. Honestly, I don’t even remember the name of it. (I know, that’s bad of me…bad Steve, BAD!)
I don’t remember it being all that good of a story anyway. Had something to do with a kid making a rocket ship, then going to space and having crazy adventures with space monsters. (Not exactly crazy-original).

You are so funny….this is increbidle!! Love all those blue eyes….wonderful!!!
Steven Novak replied
There are a lot of blue eyes, aren’t there? In fact, it’s almost Nazi’ish. ;)
BLYTHART
My main concern is this: does the world really look this way through your eyes Steven? :)) I’d love a slice of your imagination if you can spare any.
Steven Novak replied
You mean your world isn’t full of crazy neon colored monsters Dave? Hmmm…weird. Maybe it’s just here in the states? ;)
Brian Towers
A great piece of imagination and a great illustration Steven.

The fact that you don’t remember the title can somehow connect strongely with this image. As children we are so full of imagination and we fantasize about things that don’t really exist. We let go of so much as we grow older. Interesting too that the kid is not looking at those monsters, and just working away at a futuristic contraption; only looking forward. The past is behind; even a colorful one. Although for a children’s book it’ll be the opposite take I’m guessing.
Steven Novak replied
The book was actually EXTREMELY simple. Kid goes to far-away planet, kid and aliens play fun games, kid says goodbye and goes home. Not the best thing I’ve ever written, which is I guess why I remember so few details.
Alan Rodmell
As usual your unique style impresses. You have one heck of an imagination my friend.
Steven Novak replied
Thank you much Alan!

judging by the look on their faces that’s NOT a bubble gun…
Great piece! I love the way you draw kids…1/2 cute and 1/2 dangerous…but a totally innocent dangerous!
Steven Novak replied
I do often find myself putting children in situations they maybe shouldn’t be in…maybe a secret hatred for them? ;)
sweetscent62
This is freakin awesome Steven : ) I love the colours…no doubt the kids would have loved this one. How does one become an illustrator of childrens books? I wrote and illustrated a book at school when I was 8 and had it in the school library. It was done in pastel and washed in eggwhite..so God only knows how it ended up…probably full of fungus..or eaten by mice. But I was proud of it : ) and the Library teacher was wonderful. thanks for reminding me! Wen xox
Steven Novak replied
How does one become an illustrator of children’s books? A love of rejection, unwillingness to give up, and a thick skull. Talent is not a requirement. ;)
Gareth Chalklen
Brilliant work Steve.
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Gareth!

Hey!!! You got a camera in my house yet again? I thought we sorted that particular habit of yours out last time… (shakes her head) This could be EITHER of my boys… minus the monsters… Mind, we do on the odd occasion have the belly-button monster let loose around the place ;)
Freak… no-good, no-talent freak.
...........sigh, who am I kidding? Bloody brilliant work Mr Novak. I still hate you though =)
Steven Novak replied
If you didn’t “hate” me I would take it as the first sign of the coming apocalypse. ;)
