Sailing the Crazy Bed Boat Through Craziness. (Which is pretty crazy)
This is among the oldest things I’ve uploaded onto the site and because of that it looks a whole heck of a lot different than a lot of the work I’m doing these days. Also because of that there are some things I like about it, and a lot of things I don’t.
What’s it all about?
I dunno.
A kid, a shipwreck, an octopus, a bed, a turtle, a deserted island, a puppy, a weird muppet looking thing…
Maybe it’s a direct result of the head injury I had as a young man?

OK did your momma drop you on your head Steven!..LOLOL just kidding.. I think it is wonderful and colorful and should be about a boy and his Sea adventures! Love it!
Steven Novak replied
Actually I had a bicycle accident as a kid that ripped open my head and required nothing short of about 400 stitches. WEE-HOO!! Glad you like the piece Charlotte! ;)
Jan Landers
from your head injury emerged some interesting and creative art, steven…..i like this one a lot! feels adventurous and fun….. :-)
Steven Novak replied
Yes, head injuries are good for that. And for memory loss. ;) Thanks Jan!
butchart
that sure is some crazy shit….. i love it steven…........... you’re the bombadier in this genre…....... bravo…........................b
Steven Novak replied
Bombadier? I can dig that. In fact, lets make that my new nickname. ;)
darkestartist
nice. love the turtle in the corner. reminds me of some of the crazy stuff lewis carroll came up with :) nice job on the clouds as well
Steven Novak replied
Funny that you would mention the clouds because the clouds and the ocean are two of the things I absolutely hate about this piece. ;)
pinkyjain
This is fantastic Steven, pure joy of a little boy on his sea voyage with his friends, love the Frog’s expression. What a great boat, a bed boat, love it. i want one. Hope you get your work into a book, you’re gonna be a hit
Steven Novak replied
You could try and sail your bed Pinky. if you do, make sure you film it, or take some pictures because, well…it would be quite hilarious. ;) Thanks!
hikickry
good stuff :) have you seen bedknobs and broomsticks?
Steven Novak replied
One of my favorite movies when I was a kid.
Leslie Patton
colorful and full of imagination! I love it!
Steven Novak replied
Next time I put something up I want you to tell me that it sucks Leslie. Just to mix things up. Deal? ;)
vonne
Bedknobs and Broomsticks with a Steven twist = ) Love it!
Steven Novak replied
That’s how I tried to sell my remake of Bedknobs and Broomsticks to Miramax. Their response was, “Who’s Steven?” ;) Okay, that was a lie, but it was funny.
cheetaah
Very colorfull, I think you should do this kind of series with so many characters each with their individual personalties….....Your illustrations are amazing, great details….......
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Cheetaah!
Cathryn Swanson
This looks fun and adventurous. I wonder if you were to ask a bunch of kids to tell what they thought it was about? Could get some really interesting stories :)
Steven Novak replied
There is a really fantastic kids book called “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick” that sort of did that. Check it out if you’ve never seen it.
Renate Dartois
Very cool I am sure kids love this….
Steven Novak replied
Kids are dumb, they’ll like anything. ;)
BLYTHART
Head injury would explain an awful lot :)) Only teasing you … you say there are a lot of things you don’t like about this … I can’t find anything to dislike about it. As artists, we nearly all have bad days and paintings that aren’t so good, but you seem to hit the target every time.
Steven Novak replied
I told someone else that I’m not a big fan of the sky or the ocean. I liked them when I first painted them years ago but they haven’t stood the test of time for me. Also, I was big into incorporating markers back when I did this and honestly I just think they look…well…crappy…nowdays. Maybe in ten years I’ll like them again? ;)
InvisibleSmith
Great work Steven! Would make a fantastic cover for a kids book – The Magical Adventures of the Crazy Bed!
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Invisible!
RMonroe
This is wonderful. A magical adventure:)
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Robin!
CATNIPMEOW
its almost 2 sweet for you…....happy….not your normal quirkiness-
I think I had a dream like this once….......great picture Steven :)
Steven Novak replied
Too sweet? Maybe. I was younger and less beaten down by the harsh realities of marriage, work and a mortgage when I made it. ;)
sweetscent62
Hmm… a childs version of Noah’s ark? I dunno.. I just know I like it : ) Wen x
Steven Novak replied
Liking it is good enough for me! ;)
Lisa Defazio
Rock on Kid!
Steven Novak replied
Kid? Me? Been a while since anyone called me kid. ;) Thanks!
elisab
Nice work. Hope you head injury is better, even though it produced some great work!!
Steven Novak replied
It also produced an enormous, iron man looking head cast that made me look like some mad scientists botched experiment. ;) Thanks!
Karin Taylor
i really love it Steven!
Steven Novak replied
At least one of us does! ;)
samedog
Have taken my cue from the description above and have just run head first into a closed door – hasn’t done too much in the talent or inspiration department yet, but I’m a patient boy…will let you know when the head injury has worked its magic.
Steven Novak replied
You became talented without the head injury…it’s a route I really should have considered myself. ;)
Tracey-Anne Pryke
I was going to say all the above, and so I have straight away I thought of Bednobs and broomsticks just fabulous work Steven
Steven Novak replied
Which came first, this or the movie? I’m claiming this. I understand that seems quite impossible because of the constants of time, but I say time be damned!! ;)
Charl045
LOLOL..Steven I enjoy your humor just as much!
butchart
how about just bomba.. that other is alot of xtra typing every time…...............b

hmmm. well i think Turner was always the best at clouds, but you did a great job with them. :) i don’t usually like my clouds much either, if it’s any consolation, except for the dark clouds of pollution that i paint. i like those. anyways, buck up camper, you did a good job :))
oh and if you’re wondering who turner is, i mean this guy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Turner%2C_J.M._W.-_The_Fighting_Téméraire_tugged_to_her_last_Berth_to_be_broken.jpg
Steven Novak replied
Buck up camper? Thanks kiddo, your the absolute tops! ;) Oh, and I am aware of turner, four years of art college and an amazing amount of loan debt saw to that. ;)
darkestartist
LOL thought you’d like that :) Glad i’m not the only one with Cloud Inferiority Complex. there must be some drug for that…;)
Tracey-Anne Pryke
lol!....I think the film is about 38years old and the chap who played the old man brought me an ice cream…......but who care who’s the first yours is the best…..
Walker Everette
Is this from “Lost”? Nifty.
Steven Novak replied
NIfty two fifty. ;)

If this is what a head injury produces, then I’m all for it!!!! :-)) I love it, it’s a magical dream for a young boy, and nicely done. I love the silly grin on the puppy’s face!
Steven Novak replied
Thank you…but I still wouldn’t recommend the head injury. ;)
DarlaReeves
very nice work! Love all the color and would make a great children’s story!
Steven Novak replied
Thanks Darla!
