The Maheno by Penny Smith

Taken with a Nikon D60 on 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island, QLD, Australia. This is the shipwreck of the " Maheno ", which was wrecked here in 1935. It was built in 1905 and made trips between Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and New Zealand. It was used as a hospital ship in WW1, picking up wounded from Gallipoli and then in the English Channel after the battle of the Somme. It was wrecked here on Fraser Island and the Australian defense services used it as target practice for a while. It is now rusted and fading back into the ocean, but a great site for photos. This area is part of the Great Sandy National Park, a world heritage listed area.

    Love it! (Oct 26th, 2013)
Thank you also for providing some of the history of the ship in your description…that really brings it to life for me. You can imagine the crew walking the deck or it rocking back and forth as it was being used for target practice.

  • Thanks so much for the kind comments and the feature E.R. I’m glad you like the blurb, not many people read them so thank you :)
