The Maheno

Penny Smith

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Artist's Description

Taken with a Nikon D60 on 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island, QLD, Australia. This is the shipwreck of the " Maheno ", which was wrecked here in 1935. It was built in 1905 and made trips between Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and New Zealand. It was used as a hospital ship in WW1, picking up wounded from Gallipoli and then in the English Channel after the battle of the Somme. It was wrecked here on Fraser Island and the Australian defense services used it as target practice for a while. It is now rusted and fading back into the ocean, but a great site for photos. This area is part of the Great Sandy National Park, a world heritage listed area.
