Enhanced image of a mid-winters sunrise at Easter Auquhorthies stone circle in Aberdeenshire. The quiet, serene and cold atmosphere is evident in this picture.

The question is asked, what community built and used these stones and for what purpose, some 8000 years ago?

This is gorgeous – it evokes such feeling. You wonder what – or who – is going to loom out of the mist.

  • I am sure that the spirit of our ancestors were lurking in the mist that morning. The mist created the feeling that this was the extent of the world – nothing else existed or mattered. The stones are still doing their job after all these millenia.

  • Thank you Elizabeth. It was a freezing cold morning and it was still and absolutely silent. A powerful combination.
