Time for something from England – and our green and (un)pleasant summer! It’s been the wettest, dullest, coldest summer in a century, I’m led to believe – so skies like this one were a common sight, even if I did manage to get a peek of sunshine on the Abbey in this shot.

Bolton Abbey is a parish in North Yorkshire which contains the ruins of Bolton Priory, a 12th-century Augustinian monastic community which – in common with all other such communities – was destroyed by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s and 1540s.

Today, part of the ruins form a functioning Anglican church (it’s out-of-shot on the left, connected to the ruined section; originally, it was the nave and entrance porch of the larger structure). This was also the setting for the wedding of my friends Nick and Emma – a memorable day, and my only experience of wearing a top hat…
