This was all thick rainforest. This bit started to be cleared during the 1970’s.
This is along the road to Bingil Bay and Garner’s Beach in Far North Queensland, Australia.
I pulled over near a gate and took some photos. It isn’t easy to get photos as mostly the road is too narrow to stop and pull over. The rainforest used to be so close to the road on both sides here that the canopy met over the road and it was like driving through a tunnel of trees.
The little bit of rainforest that can be seen in the hills at the back is badly damaged, but recovering, from cyclone Yasi that hit this area one year previously. The trees here would have been in winds of up to 295 kilometers an hour for at least an hour. They were badly battered by that storm and lost their leaves and most branches. It will probably take a few more years before it returns to thick rainforest.
The grass that used to be rainforest is now used for cattle.
