Steve received a Nikon film SLR when he graduated from high school. He learned as much as he could by reading the books on photography from the local public library. He was fortunate to have a boss that also loved photography, and shared some of his knowledge with Steve. John Shaw, Jim Zukerman, Jon Cox, and several others were among the first photographer-authors that he read, learning to concentrate on his strengths. He had a strong background in Biology in high school; loving to explore the local woods, fields, and streams that surrounded his house. His family encouraged his discovery of wildlife, including the leaches that he accidentally found in one of the stagnant pools of water. He still enjoys long walks in the woods, with his camera over his shoulder, regularly seeing wildlife in their shrinking natural habitats. His latest experience with wildlife was walking in a city park and coming face to face(eye to eye) with a beautiful young deer with a head full of budding antlers. He sees the camera as a way to show the celebration of life that happens every day in every part of the planet.

Steve has discovered digital photography and CS3, combining the two to create images that create a whole new world of possibilities, incorporating the realm of macrophotography, landscape photography, wildlife photography, and the realm of man as it converges and conflicts with the natural habitat. He prefers to do only the least in adjusting the images, keeping them as true to the original as he can. Steve uses vanishing point, backlighting, zone methods, and other photography techniques to add creative composition and a deeper enjoyment of the images. Most of the beauty in nature is to be experienced and shared with others, from a fleeting butterfly that only lives two weeks, a beautiful blossom blowing in the wind for only two seconds, or a sunset on the Pacific that lasts an hour.

Recognizing that we are all citizens of the world, he also encourages responsible use of our planet’s limited natural resources by encouraging education, eco-consumerism, and stewardship of the world in which we live.
