Pentridge

Pentridge Jail in Coburg, Victoria now not in use since 1997 prisoners transferred else where . The front part of this jail will be kept due to historical reasons but behind it is a huge housing development happening which takes up a fair bit of land that was once the prisons area the largest in the state.

Thankyou Hans, a very well know landmark in Coburg, now behind this entrance is a new housing estate who would have quest that people would be interested in living here and mind you it’s a fairly large area as well.

This prison was designed by my great, great grandfather, Gustav Joachimi, a German immigrant who worked for the Public Works Department-and you can see the German influence (http://www.heritage.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahpi/record.pl?RNE5582). In those days they liked their prisons to be foreboding-but they also designed this on the “enlightened” plan by the English philosopher Jermemy Bentham, supposedly more humane that older prisons.

  • Steven Agius replied

Thankyou V Balester, interesting history behind this landmark.
