Waiting for you

So familiar, the heavy exhale.
I nervously swallow the last of my thickened saliva.
My eyes lose their focus as the cloud recedes into shadow.
Colour has surrendered, only shades remain.
There is no going back.

My body starts to swell and buzz,
as if I had sherbet in my blood.
I can hear my pulse throbbing in my ears.
Arrival imminent – three, two, one,
zero (my only companion).

Breath now shallow.
Minutes now hours.
Drifting further into oblivion like fog over an endless sea.
I feel EVERYTHING… or maybe nothing.
Continually mocked by reality.

Not such a bad place to be while I wait.
Wait for the only thing I truly want.
